We’re told to go to the dentist at least twice a year for cleaning and routine checks. Dental care is an essential component of our well-being. Neglecting oral hygiene can lead to painful infections that affect our daily lives.
Dental cleanings for pets are just as important as they are for humans. Our pets need healthy teeth to chew down chunks of meat and consume their food properly. Periodontal disease is very prominent amongst cats and dogs. According to statistics , 80% of pet dogs and 70% of pet cats will develop periodontal disease unless if they are given timely treatment.
Here’s why dental care for pets is crucial for the overall health of pets:
Just like humans, animals are susceptible to a range of dental issues including periodontal disease and the buildup of bacteria/tartar in the mouth.
Bacteria form a film of plague around your pet’s teeth. The plague gets calcified and turns into tartar that begins to build on the gum line. In the final stages of gum disease, the tissue is badly damaged and its socket begins to erode, causing it to fall out.
Animals with missing teeth have a hard time chewing food.
It’s very easy for pets to break their teeth. Animals don’t have the sense to avoid putting hard objects into their mouths. Chewing bones and other hard objects can cause the breaking of teeth which is incredibly painful for animals.
Oftentimes broken teeth leave nerves exposed which can lead to infections and become an even bigger problem! In worst cases, a broken tooth will have to be removed.
To keep your pet calm and relaxed during a dental cleaning procedure, the vet will likely put them under general anesthesia. They will then use tools to carefully remove tartar and plague from your pet’s teeth, being very careful not to irritate the gum line.
The vet will then give your pet a fluoride treatment to desensitize teeth and prevent plague from building up.
The easiest way to ensure your pet has health teeth is to brush them. Find yourself a pet-specific toothpaste and try to brush your pet’s teeth as often as possible.
Brushing your pet’s teeth isn’t easy. They are definitely going to put up a fight and you’ll have to hold them down as you do it.
Other than regular brushing, make it a point to take your pet to the vet for dental cleaning at least a few times a year.
